Dear Friends,
Our family was blessed with three remarkable kids, Nathan, Ethan, and Raegan. Our lives were forever changed when Ethan was two years old. He was diagnosed with a rare disease, a peroxisomal biogenesis disorder. Peroxisomal disorders are rare, genetic conditions that cause deafness, blindness, global developmental delays, adrenal insufficiency, neurological issues, and feeding issues, and are almost always terminal in childhood. Receiving such a diagnosis and caring for a child with a rare disease is difficult, isolating, and often overwhelming.
Thankfully, we were able to lean on the GFPD to help connect us with other families navigating this rare disease and with educational and support resources specifically designed for families like ours.
For over 15 years, the GFPD has been connecting hundreds of patients, families, and caregivers worldwide who face the daily challenges of living with a peroxisomal disorder through online support groups, direct parent-to-parent mentoring programs, patient and physician educational programs, medical equipment exchanges, bereavement programs, and funding medical and scientific research.
Ethan has beaten all odds and is thriving. He works out, walks his dog, and has his own business, SmoothE's, just off Park Ridge Road.
We’re hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, April 4th, SmoothE’s Hoppin’ 5k + 2k Walk, to raise awareness of peroxisomal disorders, and raise funds to support the incredible work being done globally by the GFPD. This family-friendly event will have options for all our community members to participate whether they’re avid runners or are walking with a stroller.
Because of our generous community, we raised more than $40,000 in 2025 to help the GFPD. This year, we hope to raise $50,000 but we can only reach this goal with your help.
